When you report someone else’s statement in your own words without any change in the meaning of the statement Quoting a person’s words without using his own word and bringing about any change in the meaning of the statement is a reported speech.
Reported or indirect speech is usually used to talk about the past, so we normally change the tense of the words spoken.
We use reporting verbs like ‘say’, ‘tell’, ‘ask’, and we may use the word ‘that’ to introduce the reported words.
“I love cheese sandwiches”. Finn said he loves cheese sandwiches. “What’s the time?” Finn asked what the time was.
